The Wayne Carling Foundation was established in 2007 in memory of Wayne Carling, who died on 13 November 2006 from oesophageal cancer at the age of 30, just months after his diagnosis. Wayne’s death was sudden and devastating. Loss, determination, and a decision to create something meaningful in his name led big brother, Graeme to take action. On the first anniversary of Wayne’s passing, Graeme hosted a small fundraising event in Dundee for family and friends. It was at that event that he publicly announced the creation of the Wayne Carling Foundation and set an ambitious goal: To raise £1 million for charity in Wayne’s memory. That commitment was made at a time there was nothing to support it. It was a declaration of intent, a promise made long before it appeared achievable.

...but it continues because of deliberate, sustained commitment to giving back. And that commitment remains as strong today as it was when the first promise was made.
In the early years, fundraising was driven by family and friends. Community events across Dundee and beyond steadily built momentum and awareness, raising significant funds and establishing the Foundation’s presence. As the Carling family businesses grew, so did the Foundation’s capacity to give. Over time, the majority of funds donated have come directly from the Carling family themselves, who remain the Foundation’s largest and principal funders. This is not a passive philanthropic vehicle. It is privately backed, personally driven, and sustained by long-term commitment. To date, well over £1 million has been donated to charitable causes in Wayne’s memory, fulfilling and surpassing the original goal set in 2007.
As resources increased, so too did the scope of support. The Foundation has contributed to a range of causes aligned with health, children’s services, and social impact. The evolution of the Foundation reflects a simple principle: As success grows, responsibility grows with it. What began as grassroots fundraising has matured into structured, strategic giving, always rooted in Wayne’s memory.
In direct response to Wayne's passing, the initial beneficiaries of the Foundation were Cancer Research UK, a number of bodies working together to ensure that the funds they receive and continue to carry out world-class research.

Following a family diagnosis, commitments expanded to support JDRF, a Type-1 Diabetes research organisation. The charity funds World-class research to treat, prevent and cure type 1 diabetes and campaigns to promote access to better treatments and technologies for everyone with type 1.
The Carling family answered the call of John Caudwell to join his Life Changers Circle, pledging £1million to his disabled and autistic childrens charity, Caudwell Children.

Social Bite is on a mission to bring people together, to build a collaborative movement to end homelessness. The Carling's were principal supporters of the organisation's Sleep in the Park campaign.

In November 2026, the Foundation will mark 20 years since Wayne’s passing, and two decades of sustained charitable support and impact. A black-tie gala dinner in Dundee will commemorate this milestone, celebrating not only the life of Wayne Carling, but the enduring commitment made in his honour. This anniversary represents more than a moment of reflection. It marks the continuation of a promise, and the next chapter of structured, long-term philanthropy.
We'd love to hear from you.
